2000 cult classic post-modernest film IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE from the directorial genius of Wong Kar-wai. Has been considered by many to be one of the best-shot movies of all time
A scene that perfectly exemplifies and incorporates all of the strongest elements of the Kar-wai style and the post-modern nature in the film is the hotel Scene
How does editing create emphasis, parallel, and contrast within your chosen scene(s)?
The Scene starts with Mrs chan in a taxi the scene quickly cuts to 13 different
shots of Her running up a flight of stairs then running back down walking back then down a hallway, and then back down. the sequence ends with a Close-up shot of Mr chow
We never know were she is or where she is going
Unlike Mrs chan MR Chow scenes in only in one frame as we return back to the stiled and still shot framing of the rest of the film
and gives the secse of stability after the rapid repetition of shots from the pervos sequanes
The quick editing and repeating shot represent and important moment in the story as this is the Point where Mrs. Chan might truly cheat on her husband
The indicative nature of the editing of this sequence exemplifies one of the core themes of the film which is Indsion wanting to do something that's just in your reach but making the decision to grab it
What do SFX and ambiance contribute to the scene(s) you have chosen?
1 Sound is also a key part of the scene Mrs chains frantic and eagerly footsteps echo though out the hotel as she runs up and down the stairs
2 Her constant footsteps on the marble floor Empressived the Diegetic sound created. a sense of indecisiveness and panic chan is unsaw weather to go to Chows room
3 Her footsetpt are heard before each cut and they sound different on each floor surface
giving the viewer a scense on which foor shes on before we see it
4 The footsteps of the tile floor gives an empty scense to the hotel as all we hear is the footsteps echo throughout the empty hotel giving Us a sense of Isolation and loneliness That she is alone here
And that this is her make-or-break decision in her relationship with Mr chow and her husband
5 The sequences end with one last diegetic sound bite is the final Knoak at the door elevating the frantic footsteps from the start of the sequences giving a sign of relief to Mr chow and the audience knowing at the decision she made
In your chosen scene(s), what are the emotional impacts of camera movement, height, and angle?
1 The sequence ends with a conversation between MRS chan and Mr chow a long shot is used as we stay on them for 30 seconds this long take shot and gives us time to reflect and think on the sequence that has just unfolded while also making us feel distance from the conversation making us fell like where merely pecking in on a private conversation between lovers
2 In an interview with Dicectier he talks about this very idea for the film
3/2 the long shot used in the hall way is at allmost low agnle gives a us a good look at each chacters and at their body language .
We see MRs chan fiddling with her scarf and standing like she wants to enter but just cant bring her self .
while Mr chow stands just in the door frame almost out of shot.
Stand allmost defeted but trying to hold himself together still
Even though there in their dialoge their both agreeing with each other we no its not what their really feeling
as kar wai said in a interview “the film isnt about words but about expression though the body glanses and small gestures . the words they speck are superficial and meaningless the truth is spoken though the body”.
3
Red is a key color to the world of the film Red traditionally symbolizes love hatred or any other passionate emotion. That are on full display throughout the hotel scene
4
The red coloring of the hall subtly tells the audience that what happened may not have been love or hatred but passion.
5
The scene ends with a mid-shot as Mrs Chan walks down the hall at the same time as the camera pulls back until Mrs Chan freezes at the end of the hall as the Yumeji's Theme plays thus ending the scene its on Mrs Chan.
6
The hall way is lined in such a way that are eyes are drawn to the the characters. The red draps and lights on the ceiling create Emphasis Convaying distance from the audience to the characters .
