Shane's stand-up routine
the no fiction Blog
Shane Gullies has become one of the most popular stand-up comics in America and abroad in recent years his everyman style and humor are perfectly exemplified in this routine from a show in Austin. He starts the routine by telling a relatable family story he then brings the audience in talking directly to the crowd he lets the crowd cheer to get a feel for the room He then proceeds with a generalized comment about the crowd making them a core part of the performances. he gives breathing room for the audience to laugh and react to his comments. he also uses different voices and inflections to highlight certain jokes and bits. he exaggerates aspects of the story he's telling in a way that we know is not true but we still find it funny with his line delivery and audience mood. another key aspect is his appearance some stand comedians play a character on stage or dress in a suit and tie while shanes style of humor is reliant on being an everyman kind of guy wearing a t-shirt and jeans and standing in such a way that it doesn't feel like the audience is being formally talked too in a speech-like matter but more in a conversational manner. Shane has shown that this casual style of humor works in a very casual setting between a small room of people. where it falls short is in that this style of humor might not work on a larger stage much like the Live at the Apollo stand-up. which works well when performing on a large stage in front of hunters of different people. Shane's works well in small intimate bar-type settings. in which he knows his audience and plays to his strengths as a performer making kind of low brow and story-based humor but with a very relaxed and casual manner.
Shane comedy sket
fiction Blog
Shane starts skit playing a pro golf player at a press event. He plays the starts off sketch playing it completely straight pretending that this is going to be a scene of a sports star responding to a drama of some kind. As an audience we expect it to be some kind of scandal involving an affair drug use or criminal activity.
only for the joke to be revealed that he's apologizing for not having an affair not taking drugs and being totally loyal to his wife and his career. and the audience's reactions are added to the humor of the scene as they disapprove of his actions. despite them being what would be commonly considered the morally right actions.
One thing that makes the sketch even more fun is that it never breaks it continues the joke by not comprising it with another twist or subversion this can be seen as a good or bad thing. as it allows the joke to be told to its full extent. but it is a one-trick pony with the only humor coming from the subversion and if you don't like it the first time there is no reason to watch it. the humor is also very reliant on Sex and what is the type associated with Guy humor. But it does work the skit knows what exactly what it wants to be it sticks to its core joke. Shanes's performance is perfect making it feel like both scripted but with moments of improvisation. his humor on stage can be felt just as well when but in a more controlled format. his performance does lend itself to these types of subversive comedy and over-exaggeration while remaining casual. it is definitely a style of comedy that is not for everyone as it does require a certain vibe and energy from the performer.
MY self-reflection
when writing my stand up I wanted to incorporate many of Shane's subtle elements like spacing between jokes and the use of pauses and stutters to make the lines feel more authentic and unscripted. use of informal language such as the words like “My” and Like” another key aspect of my performance is facial and body language. certain jokes are built upon the expression I do after or during the joke. judging by the audience's reaction to the physical jokes seems to get quite the laugh. as even if you don't like or understand the joke the physical performers can get a laugh out of you just for the absurdity of it. energy and vibe is also a key part of the routine Shane has a very casual energy he gets the audience in a relaxed but energized state.
i plan to emulate a similar energy as the audience will be worrying about their performances and bye acting causal and laid back with the stand up it should put them at ease also the fact I'm doing something that is so venerable and out their would probably take their mind of their own performance and focuses more on mine in which I have to create a more laid back and intermit environment. for the tired and nervous audience. Voices can also a key part of the performance Shane does this in his stand-up using different Voise's when describing of acting as different charters or individuals in his Stand-up routine.
their are serval point in my stand-up up I use different voices for characters these being my friend who use a low monotone voice to represent tiredness as in the story he is supposed to be tried. when doing the voice for my grandma I chose a very stereotypical old lady voice. I decided to do a comedy skittish one about UNI and one about family two things that the audiences would find relatable all these elements should lead to an experience in which not one person walks away without laughing once.
